Full Time Position

Flying Dust First Nation Health, Wellness & Human Services Division is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to provide leadership in the Maternal Child Health (MCH) field. This position will help families develop their parenting skills, use resources in the community, and raise healthy babies and young children in an environment of safety, growth and learning. This individual will play a vital role within the team in promoting and improve the health and conditions on Flying Dust First Nation. This position is under the supervision of the Director of Health & Wellness.

MCH is a program that is delivered through partnerships and builds on other community programs. It is a proactive, preventative and strategic approach to promoting the good health and development of on-reserve pregnant First Nations women and families with infants and young children. The program aims to reach all pregnant women and new parents, with long-term support for those families who require additional services.

Duties of the Maternal Child Health Worker (MCH) are:

  • The Maternal Child Health (MCH) Home Visitor focus on First Nations families with children aged 0-6.
  • FASD is a special component of the program the MCH Home Visitor offers specific support, awareness & education for individual families in need of this component
  • The MCH Home Visitor’s main goals of the program includes enhancing education for expecting parents and growth and development of infants and young children (relationship based) and to foster the healthy families.
  • Make regular home visits to clients, referred or participating in program
  • Determine ongoing community program needs and provide workshops and information sessions
  • Identify agencies and services for families, arrange prevention, treatment, referral and aftercare support and information to community members
  • Provide in-depth, on-going advice, consultation, and support to community members/clients or groups regarding child development
  • Attend meetings as required, case conferences and share information within the required health teams
  • Assist the Director of Health in program planning, monitoring and evaluation of Maternal Child Health and wellness program
  • Maintain daily and weekly records of work activities, as well as submit monthly reports on program activities
  • Ensure confidentiality of all client information

  • Personal experience as a parent/caregiver of infants and young children
  • In a non-judgmental approach have the desire to provide in-home support to families
  • Knowledge of family and child development
  • FASD Education/Maternal Child Health training
  • Strong connections to and involvement in the community
  • Ability to relate to families, role model effective parenting skills and positive parent-child interaction
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of cultural beliefs and practices relating to pregnancy, birth and parenting.
  • Must have your own vehicle and a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel
  • Must pass a RCMP Criminal Record Check
